Questions

How is BMI calculated?
BMI = weight in kilograms ÷ (height in meters)². US units are converted exactly first (1 in = 2.54 cm, 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg), which matches the CDC formula 703 × lb ÷ in² within a few hundredths.
What do the BMI categories mean?
For adults, WHO and CDC use: under 18.5 underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 healthy weight, 25 to 29.9 overweight, and 30 or more obesity.
Does BMI apply to everyone?
No. These categories are for adults. Children and teens are assessed with age- and sex-specific percentiles, and BMI can mislead for athletes with a lot of muscle, during pregnancy, and for older adults.
Is this medical advice?
No. BMI is a simple screening number, not a diagnosis. Talk to a doctor or health professional about your weight and health.
