Team Builder With Rules

Write one person per line, with a rule if they have one: “Ana ! team 2” keeps Ana out of team 2, “Ben @ team 1” puts Ben in team 1 only. The most constrained people are placed first, teams stay within one person of each other, and you are told when the rules cannot be met.

Teams

3 teams of 2 to 3

Seed auto-0
  • Team 1 (3)

    Ana, Dev, Gus

  • Team 2 (3)

    Cy, Fay, Hal

  • Team 3 (2)

    Ben, Eli

How it works

  1. Write the participants, one per line. Add “!” and team numbers for teams to avoid, or “@” for the only teams allowed.
  2. Choose the number of teams.
  3. Optionally type a seed to get the same teams again, or press Shuffle again for another draw.
  4. Read the teams, then copy them.

What people use it for

  • Class or workshop groups

Split a class while keeping two students who need to be apart in different teams.

  • Sports and game nights

Make even teams when some people can only play in a given team or round.

  • Work projects

Spread people over squads when some are unavailable for one of them.

Questions

How are the teams built?
The list is shuffled, then sorted so that the people with the fewest allowed teams come first. Each person is put in the least filled team they are allowed in (a tie is drawn at random). Then, if two teams still differ by 2 or more, a person is moved along a chain of allowed teams towards a smaller one until the sizes are within one person.
When does it say it is impossible?
When someone cannot join any team, when there are fewer people than teams, or when the rules force an uneven split. For example, with 4 people and 2 teams, if 3 of them can only join team 1, no split into 2 and 2 exists.
What does the seed do?
The same list, rules, number of teams and seed always give the same teams, so you can redo the draw later or show how it was made. Without a seed the draw is different each time, and the seed used is shown so you can reuse it. It is a repeatable pseudo-random draw, not a secure one.
Which rules are supported?
Only team numbers: “!” for teams to avoid and “@” for the only teams allowed, one rule line per person. It does not handle “keep A with B” or “keep A away from B”. Team numbers beyond the number of teams are ignored and listed.
