Kiln Shelf Stack Height Calculator

List each shelf with its thickness and the post height above it, add a margin at the top, and compare the total with the height of the chamber. The page shows the total, the room left or the excess, and a table you can copy.

Total height (cm)

27

Fits with 13 cm to spare · shelves 2 + posts 20 + margin 5
  • Shelf 1

  • Shelf 2

Height only. It says nothing about the load on the shelves and the posts or about safety: follow your kiln maker's manual.

How it works

  1. Enter the inside height of the kiln chamber and the margin you want at the top.
  2. Add one line per shelf: its thickness and the height of the posts above it.
  3. Read the total height and whether the stack fits.
  4. Copy the result or print the table.

What people use it for

  • Before stacking a load

Check a tall stack of shelves and posts against the chamber before you carry it in.

  • Changing post sizes

See what swapping a 10 cm post for a 7 cm one does to the total.

  • Keeping a record

Copy the stack of a firing you like and reuse it.

Questions

What is the formula?
Total height = sum of the shelf thicknesses + sum of the post heights + top margin. The stack fits when the total is not above the chamber height. The post above the last shelf is the clearance between that shelf and the pieces or the lid, so enter 0 if you do not want one.
Does it check the load on the shelves?
No. It adds heights only. The weight a shelf or a post can carry, and how to stack safely, come from your kiln maker and your shelf supplier.
Which unit should I use?
Any, as long as every figure uses the same one. The unit selector only changes the labels and the copied text.
What margin should I keep at the top?
The page does not recommend one. Use the clearance your kiln maker gives for the top of the chamber, and enter it yourself.
