Knitting and Crochet Gauge Calculator

Use your own swatch to find how many stitches to cast on and rows to work, or rescale a pattern written for a different gauge.

Stitches to cast on

100

Exact: 100 stitches

Rows to work

168

Exact rows

168

How it works

  1. Knit or crochet a swatch, wash and measure it, then enter your stitches and rows over the gauge size (10 cm or 4 inches).
  2. In size mode, enter the width and length you want. Optionally round to a stitch multiple for a pattern repeat.
  3. In pattern mode, enter the pattern gauge and a stitch or row count from the pattern to see the count for your tension.
  4. Read the exact figure and the whole number to use.

What people use it for

  • Sizing a garment

Cast on the right number of stitches for a sweater, hat or scarf at your own tension.

  • Changing yarn

Rework a pattern to a different yarn weight without redoing the maths by hand.

  • Blankets and crochet

Plan a foundation chain and number of rows to reach a target size.

Questions

How are stitches and rows calculated?
Stitches = width × swatch stitches ÷ gauge size. Rows = length × swatch rows ÷ gauge size. The exact figure is shown, then rounded to the nearest whole number or to your chosen multiple.
How does the pattern conversion work?
Your count = pattern count × your gauge ÷ pattern gauge. If the pattern says 20 stitches per 10 cm and you get 24, a 100-stitch section becomes 100 × 24 ÷ 20 = 120 stitches. Do stitches and rows separately.
Why should I wash the swatch first?
Yarn can relax or shrink when washed, which changes the gauge. Measure the swatch the way you will care for the finished piece, and measure over at least 10 cm or 4 inches for accuracy.
