Sitemap XML Checker
Before you submit a sitemap, paste it here: the mistakes that make search engines skip entries show up as a short list.
Paste a sitemap.xml or sitemap index below, or load the example.
How it works
- Open your sitemap.xml in the browser, select everything and copy it.
- Paste it into the box; a sitemap index (a list of sitemaps) works too.
- Read the counts, the hosts found and the list of problems, each with the address concerned.
- Fix the file at the source, generate it again and paste it back until the list is empty.
What people use it for
Before submitting
Check a freshly generated sitemap for duplicates and relative links.
After a migration
Spot the old host that is still in half of the entries.
Very large sites
See at once whether a file passes the 50,000-address limit and must be split.
Questions
- What limits does it check?
- The sitemap protocol allows at most 50,000 URLs and 50 MB (52,428,800 bytes) uncompressed per file, and a sitemap index may list at most 50,000 sitemaps. A <loc> must be an absolute address of fewer than 2,048 characters, written with its protocol, and every address must be on the same host. Dates in <lastmod> follow the W3C format, for example 2026-10-19.
- Is this a full XML validator?
- No. It reads the tags it needs and reports what would trip a crawler. A file with a broken tag structure may still pass here, and the pasted text is limited to 10 MB, which is enough to count 50,000 addresses but not to check a file close to the 50 MB limit. The size shown is that of what you paste.
- Does it fetch my site or check that the pages exist?
- No. It never contacts any address, so it cannot tell whether a page answers or is blocked by robots.txt. It only checks the file itself, in your browser.
