50 States Wheel
A random state from all 50, for geography lessons, state reports, road trip ideas and trivia — or one Census region at a time.
Tip: Ctrl + Enter (⌘ + Enter on Mac) runs it, from the list or from the page.
How it works
- Press Spin: one of the 50 states is drawn, each with the same chance.
- Handing out state reports? Turn on “Remove winner after each spin” so every student gets a different state.
- Use a region preset to keep the draw within the Northeast, Midwest, South or West.
What people use it for
State reports
Each student spins for the state they will research: capital, flag, history and landmarks.
Geography practice
Spin a state and ask students to find it on a blank map or name its capital.
Road trip and trivia
Let the wheel choose the next trip destination or the topic of a trivia round.
Questions
- How are the regions defined?
- They follow the four Census regions of the US Census Bureau: Northeast (9 states), Midwest (12), South (16) and West (13).
- Is Washington, D.C. included?
- No. The wheel lists the 50 states only. Add “Washington, D.C.” or the territories to the list if you need them.
