How it works

  1. Choose a preset such as 16:9 HD or 9:16 vertical, or switch to custom and type a width and height.
  2. Keep the standard 90% title-safe and 93% action-safe values, or change them to match your delivery specification.
  3. Read the margins in percent and in pixels, and the size of each safe area.
  4. Use the preview to check where text and important action can sit.

What people use it for

  • Titles and lower thirds

Keep text inside the title-safe area so no TV, projector or crop cuts off a letter.

  • Vertical video

Plan 9:16 clips for phones with margins you can type straight into your editor’s guides.

  • Motion graphics

Set guides in After Effects, Premiere or DaVinci Resolve at exact pixel values.

Questions

What are title-safe and action-safe areas?
Older TVs cropped the edges of the picture (overscan). Broadcasters therefore keep important action inside 93% of the frame (action-safe) and all text inside 90% (title-safe). Each side loses half the remaining share: 3.5% and 5% of the width and the height.
How are the margins calculated?
Margin in pixels = dimension × (100 − safe %) ÷ 200, rounded to the nearest pixel, and it is applied to each side. On 1920 × 1080 at 90%, the margins are 96 px on the left and right and 54 px at the top and bottom.
Do I still need safe zones for online video?
Modern screens show the whole picture, but apps cover the edges with buttons, captions and progress bars, and projectors and TVs may still crop. Safe margins are a cheap way to keep text readable everywhere. For social platforms, check each app’s own overlay guide too.
