How it works

  1. Write one line per fixture type: name, channels per fixture, and how many you have (for example Par LED, 8, 12).
  2. Set the first universe and the first address, and an optional gap of free channels between fixtures.
  3. Read the table of start addresses and universes, and the number of universes you need.
  4. Copy the patch list into your show file or print it for the rig.

What people use it for

  • Small shows

Patch a dozen LED pars and a few movers without a console.

  • Checking a rig

See how many universes a fixture list needs before you buy a node.

  • Spare room

Leave a gap between fixtures so you can switch to a longer channel mode later.

Questions

How many channels are in a universe?
512. A DMX512 universe carries channels numbered 1 to 512, as defined by the ANSI E1.11 standard. A fixture uses consecutive channels starting at its start address.
Why does the next fixture jump to a new universe early?
A fixture cannot be split between two universes. When a fixture of 16 channels would end past channel 512, it starts at address 1 of the next universe, and the unused channels at the end are counted as wasted.
Does it know my fixture’s channel modes?
No. You enter the number of channels of the mode you actually selected on the fixture. Check it in the fixture manual: the same model often has 3, 8 and 16 channel modes.
