How it works

  1. Enter your electricity price per kWh, from your bill.
  2. Add each device with its power in watts, hours per day and how many you have.
  3. Optionally change the CO2 factor to match your electricity grid.
  4. Compare the devices in the table to see which ones cost the most over a year.

What people use it for

  • Hunting phantom load

Check what a TV, console or set-top box costs while it sits in standby.

  • Always-on gear

Price a router, a NAS, a fridge or an aquarium pump running all day.

  • Before you buy

Compare the yearly running cost of two appliances with different power ratings.

Questions

How are energy and cost calculated?
kWh per day = watts × hours per day × number of devices ÷ 1000. A year is 365 days and a month is a twelfth of a year. Cost = kWh × price per kWh.
Where does the CO2 factor come from?
CO2 = kWh × emission factor. The default of 0.4 kg per kWh is only a rounded, indicative value, not an official figure for your country. Grid factors differ a lot from one country and one year to the next, so replace it with your electricity supplier's or your national grid's factor.
How do I find a device's standby watts?
Check the label or manual, or measure with a plug-in energy meter. Many modern devices draw under 1 W in standby, while some set-top boxes and consoles in quick-start mode draw several watts.
