Camera Field of View Calculator

See how wide a lens really sees: pick your sensor, enter the focal length and get the viewing angles, the full-frame equivalent and the scene width at a distance.

Horizontal field of view

39.6°

27° vertical · 46.8° diagonal

Crop factor

×1

Full-frame equivalent

50 mm

Scene at distance

7.2 × 4.8

How it works

  1. Choose your sensor size, or type its width and height in millimetres.
  2. Enter the focal length of the lens in millimetres.
  3. Optionally enter a subject distance to see the width and height of the scene it covers.
  4. Read the three angles, the crop factor and the equivalent focal length.

What people use it for

  • Choosing a lens

Compare what a 24 mm, 35 mm or 50 mm lens sees on your own camera.

  • Planning a shot

Know how far to stand to fit a group, a building or a product in the frame.

  • Switching sensor sizes

Translate a focal length between full-frame and cropped-sensor cameras.

Questions

What is the formula?
Angle = 2 × arctan(sensor dimension ÷ (2 × focal length)). The diagonal uses the sensor diagonal. Coverage at a distance = sensor dimension × distance ÷ focal length, for a lens focused far away.
What is the crop factor?
The full-frame diagonal (about 43.3 mm) divided by your sensor's diagonal. Multiplying the focal length by it gives the full-frame equivalent field of view.
Are the sensor sizes exact?
The presets use nominal sizes. Real sensors differ by a fraction of a millimetre between models, so type the exact size from your camera's specification for the best accuracy. Close focus and lens distortion also change the real view slightly.
