Leather Strap Rivet Spacing Calculator

Enter the position of the centre line from the edge and how far each rivet sits from it. You get the two positions to mark, a drawing, and a warning if the rivets would end up at the same place or before the edge.

Rivet positions from the edge (mm)

30 · 70

Symmetric about 50 mm, 20 mm each side

Positions only. The size of the rivet and the post, the thickness of the leather and the distance a rivet can safely sit from an edge are for you to check.

How it works

  1. Enter the distance from the edge to the centre line, and pick a unit.
  2. Enter the offset of each rivet from the centre line.
  3. Read the two positions measured from the edge.
  4. Copy them or check the drawing before you mark the strap.

What people use it for

  • Fixing a buckle or a keeper

Mark two rivets the same distance either side of the middle of the strap.

  • Copying a strap

Measure the centre and the offset on a strap you like and reproduce it.

  • A quick check before punching

Make sure the first rivet does not fall before the edge.

Questions

What is the formula?
The left rivet is at x1 = C − d and the right rivet at x2 = C + d, where C is the distance from the edge to the centre line and d the offset. If x1 would be negative, the page refuses the layout. With d = 0 both rivets are at C and a warning is shown.
Does it check the hardware?
No. The size of the rivet, the post and the leather thickness, and how close to an edge a rivet can safely go, are for you to check. The page does the arithmetic of positions only.
Can I use it for more than two rivets?
Not here. For several evenly spaced holes use the stitch hole spacing calculator or the belt hole layout of this site.
Which unit should I use?
Any one, for both numbers. The unit selector changes the labels and the copied text only.
