Break Slot Planner
Give the names, the number of break slots and how many people a slot can hold. The people are dealt out one slot after another, so the slots fill evenly. If the places are not enough, you are told how many slots or what capacity you need. Start time and slot length are optional.
Plan
7 in 3 slots
2 places left · at most 3 per slot
| Slot | People |
|---|---|
| 1 | Ana, Dev, Gus |
| 2 | Ben, Eli |
| 3 | Cy, Fay |
Slot 1: Ana, Dev, Gus | Slot 2: Ben, Eli | Slot 3: Cy, Fay
How it works
- Paste the names, one per line or separated by commas.
- Enter the number of slots and the capacity of one slot.
- Optionally enter the first start time and the length of a slot in minutes to get clock times.
- Read the table, then copy the plan or the CSV.
What people use it for
Lunch breaks in a shop or call centre
Keep enough people on the floor by letting only a few go at the same time.
School and event staff
Give each volunteer a break slot while a stand stays covered.
Shared equipment
Share a few machines, rooms or charging points among a group in turns.
Questions
- How are people placed in the slots?
- In round robin order: the first person goes to slot 1, the second to slot 2, and so on, and after the last slot the dealing starts again at slot 1. Slots never differ by more than one person, and the order you typed decides who gets which slot.
- When is it impossible?
- When the number of people is larger than the number of slots times the capacity of a slot. The page then gives the smallest number of slots, or the smallest capacity, that would work. For 10 people and 3 slots of 3 you need 4 slots or a capacity of 4.
- Does it check coverage, skills or legal break rules?
- No. It only deals names into slots. It does not know who must stay at the desk, who is on a different shift, or what break rules apply to you. Check those yourself before you publish the plan.
- How are the clock times computed?
- The first slot starts at the time you enter and every slot lasts the same number of minutes, one right after the other. If the last slot would end after midnight you are asked to change the start or the lengths.
