6 blanks.

Answer key

How it works

  1. Paste the passage you want to practise, up to 20,000 characters.
  2. Choose to hide every 2nd to 50th word, and ignore short words if you only want meaningful gaps.
  3. Pick blanks as long as the word (an easier clue) or all the same length (harder).
  4. Copy the exercise for the students and the answer key for yourself.

What people use it for

  • Language lessons

Hide every 7th word of a news paragraph to practise reading in context.

  • Revision

Paste your own notes, blank the long words and test what you remember.

  • Worksheets

Print two versions of the same text by changing the offset, so neighbours do not share answers.

Questions

Which words are blanked?
A word is a run of letters, digits and marks, with apostrophes and hyphens kept inside it, so “l’après-midi” is one word. Words shorter than your minimum are not counted at all. Of the words that count, every Nth one is hidden, which gives an even rhythm rather than a random one.
What does the offset do?
It moves which words disappear without changing how many. With every 3rd word and offset 0 the 3rd, 6th and 9th word go; with offset 1 the 2nd, 5th and 8th go. Use two offsets to make two versions of the same exercise.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. The exercise is built in your browser, nothing is uploaded and nothing about the text is recorded.
