Cryptogram Puzzle Generator

Paste a quote, get a letter-substitution puzzle to print, plus an answer page — each letter is swapped for a different one.

2 pages · A4 portrait. Only the sheet is printed. Choose “Actual size” (100%) in the print dialog.

How it works

  1. Type or paste a quote of up to 220 characters. Punctuation and spacing are kept.
  2. Choose how many letters to reveal as hints, from none to six.
  3. Press New code for a different random cipher, then check the preview.
  4. Print the sheet. Page 1 is the puzzle and page 2 is the answer key — keep it for yourself.

Questions

How is the code chosen?
The 26 letters are shuffled with your browser's secure random generator. Every letter maps to exactly one other letter and no letter ever stands for itself, so the code can always be reversed. Numbers and punctuation are left as they are.
How do the hints work?
Each hint picks one letter of the quote at random and fills in every place where it appears. Hints are printed in the answer boxes, so the solver starts with a few anchors.
What happens to accents?
Accents are removed first, so “é” becomes E. Letters outside A to Z, such as “ß”, are kept as plain characters and are not encoded.
