CSV Column Statistics

Paste a CSV, choose a column and read its count, minimum, maximum, sum, average, median and standard deviation. The separator is detected for you, quoted fields are handled, empty cells are ignored, and cells that are not numbers are listed so you can fix them. The data stays in your browser.

Format

The decimal mark is never guessed, and thousands separators are not accepted. With commas as decimals, use a semicolon or tab as separator. Empty cells are skipped; row numbers count the header as row 1. Up to 200,000 characters and 50 columns.

Mean = sum ÷ n. Median = middle value (average of the two middle ones when n is even). Standard deviation = √(Σ(x − mean)² ÷ (n − 1)) for a sample, ÷ n for a population. Nothing you paste leaves your browser.

How it works

  1. Paste your CSV and tick “first row is a header” if it has column names.
  2. Choose the column to analyse. Set the decimal mark to comma if your numbers look like 3,14.
  3. Read the average and the other statistics. Cells that are not numbers are listed with their row and column.
  4. Change the separator if the data was not split correctly, then copy the summary.

What people use it for

  • A quick look at an export

Get the average, the range and the median of a column without opening a spreadsheet.

  • Checking a column for bad cells

Find the rows where a supposed number is text, with its row and column.

  • Sizing the spread of a measure

Read the standard deviation of a sample or of a whole population of values.

Questions

Which statistics are calculated and how?
The mean is the sum divided by the number of values; the median is the middle value, or the average of the two middle ones. The standard deviation is the square root of the sum of squared gaps to the mean, divided by n − 1 for a sample or by n for a whole population. For 1, 2 and 3 the mean is 2, the sample deviation 1 and the population deviation about 0.8165.
How are empty and invalid cells treated?
Empty cells are skipped and counted. A cell that is not a number, or a short row with no cell in that column, is not used in the statistics; invalid cells are counted and the first 10 are listed with their row and column. Row numbers count the header as row 1.
Why do I have to choose the decimal mark?
The page does not guess. A value like 1,234 is 1.234 in some countries and one thousand two hundred thirty-four in others. With the point as decimal mark, 3.14 is read and 3,14 is listed as invalid, and the other way round with the comma. Thousands separators are not accepted.
What are the limits?
Up to 200,000 characters and 50 columns. Quoted fields can contain separators, doubled quotes and line breaks, as in the CSV standard. The values are never uploaded, stored or added to the address of the page.
