CSV Gap Auditor
Paste a CSV and see what is missing before you import it. For each column you get the number of empty and space-only cells, the rows with a different number of fields, and the rows that repeat the value of the key column you choose. The rows to fix are listed with the reason. The file is not uploaded.
Rows to fix
5
CSV audit: 5 data rows × 3 columns. 2 empty or space-only cells (email 2). 1 row with a different number of fields. 4 rows share 2 repeated keys in “id”. Rows to fix (5): 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.
| Column | Empty | Space-only |
|---|---|---|
| id | 0 | 0 |
| name | 0 | 0 |
| 1 | 1 |
| Row | What to fix |
|---|---|
| 2 | repeats the key “1” (also row 6) |
| 3 | empty or blank: email; repeats the key “2” (also row 5) |
| 4 | has 4 fields (expected 3) |
| 5 | empty or blank: email; repeats the key “2” (also row 3) |
| 6 | repeats the key “1” (also row 2) |
How it works
- Paste the CSV, with or without a header row. The separator is detected, or you can set it.
- Optionally choose a key column to look for repeated values.
- Read the summary, the table per column and the list of rows to fix.
- Copy the summary or the list of rows.
What people use it for
Before an import
Find the contacts without an email or the rows cut short by a stray separator.
Checking an export
See which columns of a report are mostly empty.
Finding repeated ids
Spot customers, SKUs or order numbers that appear on more than one row.
Questions
- What counts as empty?
- A cell with nothing in it, or only spaces or tabs, and any cell missing because its row is short. The table counts empty and space-only cells in two separate columns; the summary and the list of rows to fix add them together. Zero and “N/A” are values, so they are not counted.
- What does a different number of fields mean?
- The first row sets the expected number of fields. A row with more or fewer fields is flagged, usually because of a stray separator or a quote that was not closed. Extra fields are not counted in the columns, so fix such rows first.
- How are repeated keys found?
- Each non-empty value of the key column is compared with the others, ignoring case and surrounding spaces unless you turn that off. Rows that share a value are all listed, with the other rows that have it. Empty keys are reported as empty cells, not as repeated.
- Which row numbers does it show?
- The position of the record in the file, counting the header as row 1 and counting blank lines. A quoted cell that holds a line break is still one record, so in rare cases this differs from the line number in a text editor. Up to 300,000 characters and 50,000 rows.
