Leather Thread Length Estimator
Enter the length of the seam, the number of times the thread must be longer than the seam in your own experience, and the tail to keep. The page shows the total length in millimetres and metres and says which assumption it used.
Thread to cut (mm)
700
0.7 m · 100 mm × 4 + 300 mm tail
Your multiplier is an assumption, not a standard. Stitch a short test seam to find it, and keep a margin.
How it works
- Enter the total length of the seam, in millimetres.
- Enter your multiplier, for example the ratio you found on a test seam.
- Enter the tail to leave at the end, in millimetres.
- Read the length in millimetres and metres, then copy the estimate.
What people use it for
Cutting thread for a wallet
Turn the length of the seam into a length of thread, with your own ratio.
After a test seam
Stitch 100 mm, measure the thread used, and use that ratio for the long seams.
Comparing two threads
Enter the multiplier you found for each and compare the totals.
Questions
- What is the formula?
- Thread length = seam length × multiplier + tail. Nothing else is added, and nothing is rounded before the end.
- Which multiplier should I use?
- The page does not give one, because it depends on the thread, the leather thickness, the pitch and your stitch. Stitch a short test seam, measure the thread it used and divide by the length of the test seam.
- Is the result a guarantee that I will not run short?
- No. It is an estimate for a scenario you describe. Keep a margin, especially for a first project with a new thread.
- Do I need the stitch count?
- No. The multiplier already contains the effect of the pitch and the thickness. For the number of holes, use the stitch hole spacing calculator on this site.
