Quilt Block Calculator
How many 12-inch blocks does a 60 × 72 in quilt take? Enter the quilt and the block size to get the columns, the rows and the total, drawn as a grid, and see when the blocks cover a little more than the quilt.
Blocks needed
30
5 across × 6 down · covers 60 × 72 in
How it works
- Enter the quilt width and height and the block width and height, all in the same unit.
- Read the number of columns, rows and blocks in total.
- Check the covered size: if it is larger than the quilt, the last row or column is trimmed or the blocks resized.
- Copy the summary before you go shopping for fabric.
What people use it for
Planning a quilt from a block pattern
Know how many blocks to piece before you buy the fabric.
Choosing between block sizes
Try 10 in and 12 in blocks on the same quilt and compare the totals and the overhang.
Charity or group quilts
Give each volunteer a number of blocks that adds up to the full grid.
Questions
- How is the number of blocks worked out?
- Columns = quilt width ÷ block width, rounded up; rows = quilt height ÷ block height, rounded up; total = columns × rows. A 50 × 50 in quilt with 12 in blocks gives 5 × 5 = 25 blocks.
- Why is the covered size larger than my quilt?
- Because whole blocks are used. 5 blocks of 12 in cover 60 in, ten inches more than 50 in. The tool shows the difference so you can trim, add a border or choose another block size.
- Does it count sashing, borders or seam allowances?
- No. Enter the finished block size and add sashing or borders in your own plan; the binding has its own calculator.
- Is there a limit?
- Up to 200 blocks on one side and 10,000 blocks in total; beyond that the units are probably mixed up.
