Sankey Diagram Maker
Where does the money go, where do visitors drop off? List the flows as three columns and see them drawn as bands whose width is the amount.
Total entering the diagram
1,700
5 flows between 6 names.
| From | To | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Salary | Rent | 900 |
| Salary | Food | 450 |
| Salary | Savings | 350 |
| Savings | Emergency fund | 200 |
| Savings | Holiday | 150 |
How it works
- Write one flow per line: source, target, amount, for example Salary,Rent,900.
- Reuse a name to connect flows: what goes into Savings can leave it on another line.
- Read the diagram left to right. Band width is the amount, and names that have both inflow and outflow are checked for balance.
- Copy the SVG to paste into a document or slide, or download it.
What people use it for
A household budget
Show income splitting into rent, food and savings, then savings into accounts.
Website funnels
Draw visits flowing from channels to pages to sign-ups without a BI tool.
Energy or materials
Show inputs, losses and outputs of a process on one picture.
Questions
- Why does it refuse some data?
- A flow that returns to an earlier name makes a loop, and a Sankey diagram reads left to right, so loops cannot be drawn. A name flowing into itself, a zero or negative amount, and more than 200 flows or 60 names are refused with the line number.
- What does “unbalanced” mean?
- For a name in the middle, what comes in should equal what goes out. If 1,000 enters Savings and only 800 leaves, the tool lists it so you can spot a missing line. The diagram still draws, using the larger side for the height of the block.
- Can I use decimals and thousands separators?
- Use a dot for decimals and no thousands separator: 1250.5, not 1,250.5. Commas, semicolons and tabs separate the three columns.
