How it works
- Paste the original text on the left and the new version on the right.
- Tick the options if capital letters or spacing should not count as changes.
- Read the highlighted lines: red are removed, green are added, grey is unchanged.
- Copy the result as a unified diff to send in a message or apply with git or patch.
What people use it for
Contracts and documents
Spot the clauses a counterpart quietly reworded between two drafts.
Config files and code
Compare two versions of a config file and send only the difference.
Copy edits
Check what an editor changed in your article, line by line.
Questions
- How are the lines compared?
- Each text is cut into lines and the longest run of lines the two texts share is kept; everything else is shown as removed from the left or added on the right. It compares whole lines, not words, so a one-word edit shows as one line removed and one added.
- What do the options change?
- Ignoring white space treats runs of spaces and tabs as one space and trims line ends. Ignoring case treats A and a as equal. Lines that match under these options are shown with the text of the new version.
- What is the unified diff?
- The format used by git diff and the patch tool: lines starting with - were removed, + were added, with three unchanged lines around each block and a header such as @@ -3,7 +3,8 @@ giving the position. Differences in the final line break are not reported, and the copied patch uses plain line breaks (LF). The lines around a change are taken from the original text, so the patch applies to it even when you ignore case or spaces.
- How large can the texts be?
- Up to 5,000 lines each. When the part that differs is very large (about 9 million line pairs), the tool asks you to compare in smaller parts rather than freeze your browser. Nothing is uploaded.
